ECP Treatment For Heart Block
Enhanced External Counter-pulsation (EECP) Or/ External Counterpulsation (ECP) can be an option when all other treatments have failed to relieve the persistent symptoms of chest pain or angina. It stimulates the blood vessels to develop small branches and thus helps in creating a natural bypass around narrowed or blocked arteries.
Functioning of ECP treatment
The EECP treatment for heart block is included at Poona Preventive Cardiology Center as part of its Preventive Cardiology. This treatment uses a series of blood pressure cuffs on both legs. It gently and at the same time firmly compresses the blood vessels in the lower limbs thereby increasing blood flow to the heart. Electronic timing of each wave of pressure to the heartbeat is done. This ensures that the increased blood flow is delivered to your heart at the precise moment it is relaxing. Pressure is released instantaneously when the heart pumps again thereby lowering resistance in the blood vessels in the legs. This ensures that easy pumping of blood from your heart.
ECP may encourage some small blood vessels or collateral blood vessels in the heart to open which may eventually become “natural bypass” vessels. They help to provide blood flow to heart muscle and thereby provide relief from chest pain.
Duration of ECP Treatment
Patients must undergo 35 hours of ECP treatment therapy. This treatment is administered for totally 7 weeks the duration being five days a week and 1-2 hours a day.
Patients Eligible for ECP Treatment
People with the following conditions can undergo the EECP Treatment Therapy:
- With chronic stable angina
- Unable to receive adequate relief by taking nitrates, calcium channel blockers, and beta-blockers
- Candidates not suitable for invasive procedures like angioplasty, stent or bypass surgery.
Benefits of ECP Treatment
The following are the benefits enjoyed by patients undergoing EECP, including:
- Decreases the need for anti-angina medicines
- Reduces symptoms of angina
- Increases ability to do activities without onset of symptoms
At PPCC our patients are highly benefitted with this comprehensive non-invasive procedure and are able to return to their most preferred and enjoyable activities.
